Lesson 31

1.head n. 1.头,头部,首2.领袖3.想象力,理解力4.前面;前部 v.1.在…前头,为…之首,在…之顶部2.用头顶(球),用头撞,拦截3.朝某方向前进
lose one's head 慌乱,不知所措,过于激动(become confused or over-excited)
例句:1.Don't lose your haad-keep calm!
不要惊慌失措,保持冷静。
2.When accused, he lost his head and behaved like a fool.
受到指控时,他不知所措,举止同傻瓜一样。
off the top of one's head 毫无准备(at a guess, without taking time to prepare properly)
A:Can you tell me what percentage of the United States population is registered to vote?
A:你能告诉我美国人口中登记投票人数的百分比吗?
B:Off the top of my head. I'm afraid I don't know.
B:没有事先准备,我恐怕是毫无所知了。

2.make vt.1.变成2.制造3.产生4.使某人做某事
make a difference 影响 (affect sb.; be of importance and influence)
A:It is broadcasted that tomorrow is 35 degrees centigrade.
A:据广播说明天摄氏35度。
B:Our son can manage to adjust to it,We ensure him a good rest tonight and it should make no difference to him.
B:我们的儿子是能够调整自己适应气温的。我们只要保证今晚让他睡好,他就不会受什么影响。
2.A:There may be a snow tomorrow.
A:明天可能会下雪。
B:I won't make any difference to them.
B:这对他们不会有什么影响的。
make a fuss 大惊小怪 (over-surprised at sth.)
惊小怪例句:As she disliked making a fuss and getting people in trouble, she decided to take back the money from the old lady's handbag and say nothing more about it.
由于她不喜欢大惊小怪,给别人添麻烦,于是她决定从老太太的手提包中取回那些钱,不再声张此事。
make a hotel reservation 预定饭店
例句:I need to make a hotel reservation for the conference.
我得跟饭店预订房间开会。
make a living (earn a living) 谋生(try to earn money and support oneself)
例句:1.If they were given this training, ex-prisoners wouldn't turn to crime again to make a living.
如果那些从监狱放出来的人得到过培训,他们就不会再靠犯罪谋生。
2.Many people go to school to leam a skill so that they can make a living.
很多人为了谋生到学校去学一技之长。
make sure 弄清楚;保证(find out for certain; arrange so)
例句:l.It is said that there is a meeting next week. I'd better make sure of the time.
据说下周要开会,我把时间弄清楚。
2.Other machines make sure that the trains are always a safe distance apart.
其他机器是为了保证火车之间保持一段安全的距离。

3.save vt.1.节约,积蓄2.挽救,拯救
save one's breath 别白费气力(说某事)
例句:Donna should save her breath because she can't convince her friends.
唐娜就该别费劲了,因为她不能说服她的朋友。
save your explanation 别费劲解释了
例句:Save the explanation, I probably would have done the same thing.
别费劲解释了,我也许会做同样的事情的。

4.used to (do) 过去常常
used to 过去;过去常常(had a habit to do sth.in the past<对照get used to“开始习惯”和 be used to“习惯”记忆>)
例句:1.They used to eat in the cafeteria, but now that they have an apartment, they cook at home.
他们过去在食堂吃饭,现在他们有房子了,他们在家里做饭。
2.Mary used to enter all the races, but now she's given up running.
以前玛丽会参加所有各场赛跑,但她现在已不再跑了。
