The author of this paper tries to re - interpret the thematic ideology of this novel from the viewpoint of human civilization and its discontents. While civilization produces happiness--the union of Heathcliff and Catherine in Heaven and the union of Hareton and Cathy on earth, it produces unhappiness--Hindley＇ s persecution of Heathcliff, Edgar＇s strike against Heathcliff, Edgar＇s condemnation of Isabella and Linton Heathcliff＇ s selfishness and insensitivity to others ; on consequence of this, the individuals in the novel rise against persecution and fight for freedom and dignity.
