Originating in Qinghai province, the Yellow River flows through nine provinces and finally empties into the Bohai Sea. It is one of several rivers for China to live on. Its basin was the birthplace of ancient Chinese civilization and the most prosperous region in early Chinese history. However, because of frequent devastating floods, the river has caused many disasters. In the past few decades, the government has taken various measures to prevent disasters.
